Regarding the May 11th article about the newspaper's "green" family: I applaud their efforts in regard to the environment, but disagree with the man's opinion regarding the installation of solar panels. He said "one good hailstorm could wipe out the project".

 

Manufacturers test these projects under such conditions. What part of the country doesn't get hail? These modules are built to last.

 

If the family put solar panels on the roof, they would reduce the electric bill. When they make more electricity than they use, the meter will "spin backwards" and they will get credit.

 

They increase the value of the home and hedge against future rises in electric costs, and can earn income from the sale of RECs (renewable energy credits).
